一位讀者來信，問inwhich是不是等於where；另一位讀者則問inwhich和ofwhich的分別。

這其實是which、whom等關係代名詞（relativepronoun）和介系詞（preposition）合用的問題。

拙欄說過，關係代名詞可以取代連接詞（conjunction）和名詞或一般代名詞。請看下面一句：Iboughtthehouse,andIlivedinit（我買了那幢房子居住）。改用關係代名詞which，原句and、it二字就可以不用；關係代名詞必須盡量靠近所代表的名詞，所以which必須放在house之後；又原句代名詞之前的介系詞仍須放在關係代名詞之前，於是which之前須加in字：Iboughtthehouse,inwhichIlived。文法上，這個inwhich當然可用where取代。

請再看以下例子，就應可掌握「介系詞＋關係代名詞」這句式：

（1）Theymadeaplan,butIknewnothingofit.（他們定了計劃，但我一點都不知道。）＝Theymadeaplan,ofwhichIknewnothing.

（2）IsawTom,andIgavethelettertohim.（我見到湯姆，把信交給他。）＝IsawTom,towhomIgavetheletter.

（3）Thatwasanimportantpoint,andhedrewmyattentiontoit.（那一點很重要，他叫我注意。）＝Thatwasanimportantpoint,towhichhedrewmyattention.
